Much of this information was taken from the "History of Pine Run Presbyterian Church at Markle." Copies are available at the church.
February 13, 1846 - Land was surveyed for use as a Presbyterian Meeting house and graveyard (see Cemetery Reclamation page), 1 acre each. Located on what is now White Cloud Road and Woodberry Road.
June 1, 1846 - Land purchased from William McGeary and his wife for the cost of $15.00.
All selecting, surveying, paying and recording was done in 1846. Even the name of the church had been chosen.
January 12, 1847 - Petition presented to Presbytery to organize a new church in Allegheny Twp. Westmoreland County to be called Pine Run Church.
January 13, 1847 - Petition was granted, as all preliminary work was complete.
April 1, 1847 - 1st recorded use of meeting house. There is no recorded history on when the meeting house was built but there is recorded history of the congregation meeting on April 1, 1847. Therefore the meeting house must have been completed by that time.
Mr. Lawrence McLaughlin who was ninety-one years old when the church celebrated it's 100th year anniversary, was at that time the only member of Pine Run that remembered the first church; and it is to him that we are indebted for the following information. It was weather-boarded and was unpainted, both inside and out. There was a door at each of the four corners and the heating system consisted of four stoves. Near the church was the grove which provided the hitching ground considered necessary in those days.
April 13, 1847 - Presbytery convened and reported that the new Church had been formed with 45 members.
May 14, 1847 - 14 more members were added.
June 17, 1847 - The first Bible and table were purchased for use in the meeting house.
April 1868-1866 - Pine Run suffers a loss of between 35 and 40 members as groups of people migrated West, which apparently meant Iowa and Kansas.
1869 - The congregation decides to build a new church. As the old was so run down and dilapitated. The committee was instructed to find the most suitable and convenient place near the McLaughlin store. Which resides in the center of what is now the villiage of Markle. They wanted the location to be in the center of the town.
January 13, 1872 - The church deed states that on this date the land on which our church presently sits was given to the church by Samuel and Sarah McLaughlin. Samuel and Sarah's graves can be viewed at the Pine Run Cemetery.
November 1869 - A reported $1,837.36 had been secured for the construction of Pine Run Church. During the time between when the old church was torn down and the new church was built the congregation met in school houses in the winter months and in the grove during good weather.
January 1, 1870 - Original Church is demolished and lot is sold.
1875 - Markle Normal Academy is formed. A college preparation school for both men and women. The Normal Academy still stands and is owned by Ed and Carol Salyers of Markle PA.
February 6, 1899 - Charter for the Pine Run Presbyterian Church is obtained. The church was built of yellow brick at the approximate cost of $5,500.
October 28, 1906 - The cornerstone was laid.
October 27, 1907 - The church was dedicated free of debt.
1947 - The 100 year anniversary of the founding of Pine Run is celebrated. A booklet was printed commemorating this event.
1997 - The 150th anniversary was celebrated with a history booklet from which most of this information was gleaned. A banquet was held at the Markle Fire hall and a song "Here In This Church " was written and performed by church member Marcie Covey.
October 2006 - The 100th anniversary of the present church building was celebrated with a special church service and birthday party in the fellowship hall.
2005 - 2007 - A new furnace and roof were necessary to ensure the future of the church building. The money was raised and the improvements were accomplished. We continue to preserve our dear church.
Rev. J. S. Helm, pastor of Pine Run Church in 1907 when the church was dedicated, preached his dedication sermon "The Church, the Soul's Home." His words are still true today.
In closing: It is fascinating to read the history of our church and to walk through the cemetery and find the graves of the men and women who built it. You are invited to join us at Pine Run Church as we continue our journey of faith in Jesus Christ through the ages of time.
